Since I am no longer in Europe, and I will be leaving for Asia shortly, I thought it prudent to get rid of the Paris-themed graphic up top for something a little more generic (although astute observers will certainly notice the new image is still from France). I’m afraid this website is now a contender for world’s most boring design, though…
I widened the content a little bit, changed up the header graphic, and got rid of the annoying Lightbox image viewer. I initially designed the page to using Lightbox because I thought it was better for maximizing the amount of content on a page, but then I realized that I don’t really post all that often and I prefer having larger images anyway, not to mention that overuse of Lightbox on the web has been getting (for a while now) quite irritating.
Additionally, I find it pretty amazing that Tumblr and Disqus (the thing that powers my seldom-used commenting system) are still free…
It’s just as lovely as the last!
I always get worried right before Sigur Rós releases a new album, but I’ve never been disappointed.
A few notes from Chicago-Midway from my flight yesterday…
Firstly, in a welcome development, they’ve got free wifi — 15 minutes of free access for each ad you watch; a maximum of 4 ads per day. Didn’t actually have to watch any ads to get access on my iPhone, though.
Secondly, there’s this bakery (I’m not sure if it’s a chain or not, and I couldn’t find a website for it), called Let Them Eat Cake, whose proprietors seem to have modeled their store after a French boulangerie. Only it was apparent they didn’t know what they were doing from the plethora of bad French in the store (you know, incorrect use of partitives, incorrect genders — one particularly egregious example: le salades — bleh!). Strangely enough, I managed to suppress my revulsion and ordered a strawberry cheese croissant, but as I should have expected it was horrible.
And yes, it has occurred to me that I should change my header graphic.
But parting with Europe is so painful that it must be done extremely slowly!
In today’s Taipei Times: Taiwan leads Asia in media freedom list for second year
“Taiwan has won the distinction of being listed as having Asia’s freest media environment for the second consecutive year in the annual Freedom House report.”
“The US non-governmental organization’s Freedom of the Press 2008 report released on Tuesday in advance of World Press Freedom Day on Saturday lists Taiwan as one of only three Asian countries with “free” media.”
“Of the 195 countries and territories included in the rankings, Taiwan was listed 32nd, up one place from last year. This year’s score for Taiwan was its best ever. Taiwan’s ranking was the highest in Asia, ahead of Japan at 35 and South Korea at 67 — the only three Asian countries where the report lists the media as ‘free.’”
In contrast to what’s happening in China now.
Somehow Alp talked me into taking the train to Chicago. I’m going to leave from New London and meet him in NYC at Penn Station for the 19 hour trip on Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited.
(from Wikipedia: The Lake Shore Limited is jokingly referred to as the Late For Sure Limited, the Late Shore Limited, or “Train 48-Late” (riffing on its eastbound route number, “48”) among railfans, as the line frequently runs significantly behind schedule.)
We’ll see how things turn out, but I think this is going to be a one-time experiment.
trying to bien profiter from my last week in paris…went to la loco two nights ago and cab last night and got back after 3 in the morning both times…
what’s hard is trying to enjoy my last week while balancing all the work we have! and it’s proving very difficult to write papers without easy access to printing or a proper library. i have 10 pdfs from academic journals open at once on my little monitor while i write and i can’t keep track of anything!
time to stop procrastinating and get back to my paper.
